Urban Studies Network Day

Jointly  organized by CREATE, ACUH, ASCA, and CUS

January 30th, 2020

12:30-17:30hrs, with drinks afterwards

Lloyd Hotel

We are pleased to announce the fourth Centre for Urban Studies Network Day on the 30th of January 2020, as well as an upcoming special round of Joint Seed Grants. The network day is co-hosted with the CREATE research program, the Amsterdam Centre for Urban History (ACUH), and the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA). Building on last year’s much appreciated experience, this year’s Network Day aims to further explore shared interests and stimulate future collaborations between urban scholars at the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences and at the Faculty of Humanities. By inviting planning and development academics, historians, geographers, anthropologists, cultural analysts, sociologists, political scientists, and all other researchers at CREATE, ACUH, CUS, and ASCA, we will bring together scholars looking at cities from a wide range of temporal and geographical perspectives as well as varying approaches.

To start the Network Day, a lunch will be offered. Next, one-minute presentations will allow participants to introduce their research to a broad group of colleagues. Further exploration of shared interests will be stimulated by interactive one-to-one exchanges and round table sessions. This year, next to free, improvised round-tables like last year, we will also have two pre-set round tables surrounding the following themes of expected particular strategic value: Urban Development Linking Past and Future and Datafied Society/Smart Cities, a Critical View.

To stimulate the establishment of new research initiatives and support their realization, after the Network Day, CUS and CREATE will jointly fund a round of Joint Seed Grants for collaborative projects following up on the ideas developed during the day. Seed Grants are relatively small grants of up to € 10.000 that aim to bring different people together to discuss ongoing research, create a platform to develop and/or get additional feedback on research proposals. For example, Seed Grants might enable awardees to set up a playshop, pilot studies, organize interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary workshops, or invite international speakers. Proposals involving PhD students, (research) master students or aiming at developing new research proposals are particularly welcomed. The joint CUS-CREATE round of Seed Grants invites research partners or groups composed of both FMG and FGW scholars to send in proposals for collaborative projects. More details will be provided during the Network Day, including short pitches by previous grant recipients.

Please express your interest by filling in this form by the 10th of January 2020. Preparation is not required, except for sending one supporting slide for the one-minute presentation to urbanstudies@uva.nl . Participation in the Network Day is free for all members of the aforementioned centres and institutes. Please contact us at urbanstudies@uva.nl if you would like to participate but are not a member.
