This month’s Salon will focus on the involvement of citizens in the transcription and interpretation of historical sources for purposes of access and research. Confirmed speakers (Angélique Janssens, Radboud University, Bert Spaan, bertspaan.nl and Kees Mandemakers IISG) will present examples of recent projects that involve the crowd in historical and cultural heritage projects (VeleHanden.nl and The NYC Space/Time Directory). In a subsequent panel discussion, we will reflect on crowdsourcing as a form of citizen science. Panelists (Julia Vytopil, Suzan van Dijk and Nicoline van der Sijs) are asked to open the discussion by preparing short, one-sentence statements on the following three topics:

  1. Aim and results of crowdsourcing projects
  2. Business models and organization
  3. Ownership and reuse of the dat
